Information Technology


The Information Technology and Communications Department has responsibility for the strategic planning, co-ordination and implementation of all computer and information technology matters. It is also responsible for the purchase of all computer related items. To help achieve the department's programme of work policy is developed through consultation with other sections in the Council.
The IT department is fully integrated into the Council's management system, not only by being represented on the Management Team, but also being an active participant in the Organisational Change and Modernisation Cluster Group of the Management Team charged with strengthening the organisation of the Council.
The department is divided into teams as follows:- Infrastructural Services, Applications Development and Design, Geographical Information Systems, Business Development, Connect Project.

 

SQL Server has been adopted as the relational database of choice and where possible has been introduced into Council systems. However Open Source software such as Linux and Apache are also widely used.
The principles of diversity and inclusion are key drivers of creativity, invention and innovation. The aim is to connect all stakeholders to the power of technology both in the workplace and in the community. The creation of a diverse and inclusive environment is an ongoing journey of continuous change for many years now. This Information Strategy and customer-focused approach will continue to be developed, harnessing IT in enabling the citizen to interact easily and meaningfully with the Council.
Information systems and technology is pivotal to the organisation change agenda in the Council. It is an enabler of efficient service delivery and much is demanded of it. Presently the IT department has its focus and aim on gaining greater efficiencies form less resources. It is constantly investigating new technology platforms which can provide better and more reliable tools for staff and citizens of the county.
